About the artist
Jodie McAlpin (b. 1991) is an expressive portrait and wildlife artist based in the UK. Her artistic practice is deeply rooted in the exploration of personal experiences and emotions, blending vibrant energy with thoughtful introspection.
Jodie’s creative process begins with the spontaneous application of fluid acrylics and spray paint, allowing her emotions to dictate the initial layers of her work. This approach serves as the foundation for her compositions, which often merge elements of portraiture and nature. By combining these two subjects, she reflects a deep appreciation for the connection between the human experience and the natural world.
Jodie’s work is characterized by a dynamic interplay of colour, texture, and form, capturing the essence of life’s complexities. As her practice evolves, she continues to explore new themes and techniques, always seeking to create a profound connection between her art and its viewers. Her pieces have found homes in private collections and continue to resonate with audiences worldwide.
My Story
Growing up
Art has always been a part of my life, growing up I was always creative, and Art was my favourite subject in school. I even had a still-life painting I created get selected for a High School exhibition in the Scottish Parliament.
After High School, I decided to go into full-time work instead of going to Art School. I have worked in various admin and retail positions in various sectors, but never felt truly happy. It wasn’t until the age of 30 that I finally found the confidence to follow what I loved - creating art.
The beginning of my art career
It wasn’t until the pandemic hit when we were all forced to face some challenging circumstances, that you realise who and what is important in life. Then, I lost my Mum very suddenly and losing her so quickly quite honestly terrified me. It opened my eyes to how quickly things can change and made me realise if I didn’t go after what I wanted to now, I may never get the chance.
This wake-up call set me off on the pursuit of following my dreams and passions and I decided it was time to do what makes me happy in life. I hope my story can resonate with others, and inspire others to also follow their dreams.
